Largely inspired by Norwegian turner Petter Herud a series of Revolving (or Live) Stebcentres has been introduced. Not only do these offer the same degree of security as the conventional Stebcentre, but they have allowed the turner to experiment with basic off-centre turning. Visit www.robert-sorby.co.uk to download instructions on how to produce multi-sided dishes and bowls.

The original Stebcentre is an invaluable accessory for every woodturner. Fitted in the lathe head-stock it is a boon for both the novice and the experienced. Its ring of sharp teeth ensure that the Stebcentre bites the wood to give more security and more drive. Because there are several points of contact there is minimal risk of splitting. The Stebcentre can be used with equal confidence on both soft and hardwoods as well as synthetic materials. In its patented design the Stebcentre also features a spring-loaded point. By slightly backing off the tail-stock the work piece still remains resting between the revolving centre and the Stebcentre. This allows the turner to inspect his work without the need to switch off the lathe. Where time is a critical factor the Stebcentre is ideal as the work-piece can be quickly removed without stopping the lathe. Overall length: 4". Patent No. 2286138

The Sandmaster is an essential part of every turner's tool kit. It comes with 5 different grits of abrasive to take even the roughest projects to a glass-like finish every time. It avoids an uneven finish often associated with hand sanding and there is no danger of catching hands on the revolving project. There is little or no surface damage/head build-up, as there is with power sanding and there is no cable to trip over. Head articulates to access even the most difficult areas. Sponge head is ideal for working in tight spaces. Sandmaster creates a fraction of the dust generated by power sanding. It can be adapted to take a polishing mop.

The SC1 and SC2 are the first mini-chucks on the market to offer woodturners a premium-quality solution for those who regularly turn small, intricate items - bringing the world-renowned quality of the SC3 and SC4 to the mini-chuck market. The SC1 works in conjunction with a separately available insert, which means it can be used across a wide variety of lathes with different thread sizes, with a simple change of insert. It also makes a perfect partner to the SC4 chuck, as the inserts are a universal fit between both chucks. It also has a very compact 53.5 mm (2”) diameter body - giving easier access around the workpiece making it ideal for the turning of very small items. Insert must be bought separately.

The Hardwood Scraper is different in that it has a negative rake on the bevel. It is designed to reduce or eliminate tear-out of the fibres of wood leaving a highly polished surface on all types of wood. This feature is particularly highly sought after by those working in the typically hard woods like African Blackwood. Musical instrument makers find the Hardwood Scraper a particularly useful addition to their collection of lathe tools. It is equally effective on spindle and faceplate work.

The Buffing Tree comprises of three 6 inch wheels, in the A, B and C cloth grades, firmly held on a central spindle. It’s ideal for buffing small items and, after loading the wheels with the compounds and wax, allows you to move from one wheel to the next in quick succession, dramatically reducing the time otherwise taken up by changing wheels. Ideal for polishing small items such as fruit, pens, boxes etc in batches. Requires one of our mandrels to fix to the chuck and a live centre for support at the tailstock. PLEASE NOTE: The Buffing Tree does not come as kit containing the mandrels and compounds etc; this is deliberate as if you already use the Buffing System you will have these and won’t want to buy them again. If you do not have these items they are available to purchase separately or as a pack in the Buffing Accessory Pack.

The central locating pin of the drive centre retracts into its body when pressure is applied from the lathe tailstock, leaving the ring of teeth around the circumference to hold the workpiece extremely securely, with clamping pressure spread evenly across the teeth. The retraction of the locating pin means it cannot split the timber, making it ideal for use with smaller and more delicate work. The locating pin tension is adjustable, allowing for lower tension to be set for small, delicate workpieces and higher tension for use with hard woods and large timbers.Another key benefit of this design is that the workpiece can be removed from the lathe if required and easily repositioned, using the indentations created by the locating pin and ring of teeth as an accurate guide.

Friction Polish is a shellac based polish ideal for creating a high gloss finish on or off the lathe. It’s a great decorative finish and is ideal for small items but can be difficult to apply to larger items on the lathe (over about 8 inch diameter). The high amount of shellac in Friction Polish does two main things. Firstly it helps seal bare wood and give it a great shine, which is good. Sadly the price of this commodity shot up a few years ago when the shellac crop failed and it never went back down, meaning that the cost of the polish has also risen sharply. Nevertheless, Friction Polish remains one of the most popular finishes for turners. It can be applied to bare wood but is normally used over a sealer and any of the sealers in the Chestnut Products range are suitable for this. Applied with the lathe running it dries almost instantly and builds to a deep, rich shine very quickly. Avoid using too much as this can cause ‘rings’ to appear on the surface. Friction Polish can be applied off the lathe with great success, using it like a French Polish and rubbing it into the surface. This does require a large amount of elbow grease (sadly not something we supply) but the end result is well worth the effort!

Shellac Sanding Sealer is the traditional way of sealing timber prior to applying a polish or a wax. Chestnuts version has a high percentage of real shellac which means it does the job extremely well, dissolved in an ethanol solution to make it easy to apply and quick drying. Applied by cloth, brush or spray it dries in about 20 minutes, making it very popular for cabinet and architectural work as it is easy to keep a wet edge running. It is also popular with woodturners and highlights the natural grain of the timber extremely well. Sand back lightly after application and apply Friction Polish, French Polish or any of Chestnuts waxes on top. Conforms to EN71 Part 3 – suitable for toys and nursery furniture.
-
Chestnut Drill Polishing Brush has natural bristles that might seem a little harsh for polishing waxes but in fact are ideal for the task. Chestnut Drill Polishing Brush, which fits any electric drill or can also be used with the Buffing Wheel System, will give a higher gloss and more resilient finish to any waxed piece. In use, the bristles splay out in a mushroom shape, making this brush ideal for polishing spindles and cylinders. It can be used on flat surfaces but is prone to leave rings so the drum brush or dome brush are recommended for this application. The stock of the brush is about 10cm and the bristles are 4cm long. If the bristles of the brush become clogged with wax simply wash it in warm soapy water and allow to dry before use.

- The multi-tooth drive centres feature a ring of teeth around the circumference of the tip, with a central drive point to give accurate positioning. This design gives an extremely strong grip, thanks to the many points of contact in the timber, which also minimises the risk of splitting the timber.
