  • When first published in 1987, The Art of Turned Bowls was a work ahead of its time. Now, considering the resurgence in popularity of this woodworking genre, the book is perfectly poised for rediscovery. Retooled with fresh full-color photographs of contemporary bowls featuring the work of award-winning turners from around the world, Richard Raffan's classic has been totally updated to meet the demands of today's turner. With a unique talent for making even the most abstract ideas accessible, the world's most admired turning teacher offers an invaluable wealth of design advice. This beautiful volume from Richard Raffan is dedicated to the art of creating aesthetic forms in your turned bowls. More about design than about technique, The Art of Turned Bowls displays a wide range of bowls — by a host of experienced turners—with analysis that will help you create more artful bowls with a sense of balance and proportion. As you flip through the pages, you'll discover how the subtle form and shape of a well-turned bowl is one that's also a delight to hold and use.

  • Stebcentre

    £61.26£71.48
The original Stebcentre is an invaluable accessory for every woodturner. Fitted in the lathe head-stock it is a boon for both the novice and the experienced. Its ring of sharp teeth ensure that the Stebcentre bites the wood to give more security and more drive. Because there are several points of contact there is minimal risk of splitting. The Stebcentre can be used with equal confidence on both soft and hardwoods as well as synthetic materials. In its patented design the Stebcentre also features a spring-loaded point. By slightly backing off the tail-stock the work piece still remains resting between the revolving centre and the Stebcentre. This allows the turner to inspect his work without the need to switch off the lathe. Where time is a critical factor the Stebcentre is ideal as the work-piece can be quickly removed without stopping the lathe. Overall length: 4". Patent No. 2286138

Compared to other forms of turning, small-scale work is economical in terms of materials and equipment, and small pieces are easier to sell than large ones. But above all, small-scale turning is fun! The following attractive projects are covered in step-by-step detail: turquoise and tulipwood vase, metal-foil bowl with stand, miniature table, lidded box with finial, alabaster vase, lathe, spinning wheel, and fountain pen.
